Performing Arts: Drama & Theatre Program

St. David's TheaterThe aim of the drama programs at St. David's is to teach students to contemplate the human condition as revealed through great drama; to teach them the craft of acting; and to lead them to effective, artistic, and comfortable public speech both on and off-stage.

Beginning in eighth grade, the drama program builds on performance skills already established through participation in choirs and bands. Students study pantomime, improvisation, monologues, and short scenes. The final project of middle school drama classes is the presentation of short plays and scenes for students and the school community. Upper school students study acting at intensified levels. The upper school classes include Foundations in Acting, Advanced Acting, and Theatrical Design. Courses in Improvisation, Playwriting, and Directing will be introduced in the near future.

Co-curricular drama includes a theater workshop for seventh and eighth graders. These students concentrate on individual performance in monologues and scenes. Additionally, students eighth through twelfth grade are invited to audition and perform in the fully-staged fall and spring productions.
