The Warriors varsity girls golf team lost to The O’Neal School 151-173 Wednesday in Pinehurst. It was their first match away from River Ridge in Raleigh. Junior Abigail McClatchey led St. David’s with 53. Sarah Curtis McClatchey and Elizabeth Wiley rounded out the team score. “We only had four golfers available today because of illness and scheduling conflicts,” said coach Mark Bentley. We played Pinehurst #7, which is one of the most difficult courses we’ll play all year. We hit some great shots and continue to improve.” Weather has not been kind to the Warriors this fall. They had played only one complete match before this one, with two others suspended by rain and lightning soon after play started. “We’ve made the best of it and worked on a lot of things in practice,” said Bentley. “We’ve spent the majority of our practice time on putting, which I think is the most important part of golf. Our goal is three fewer putts per girl per nine holes and we are getting there. I think our practice will pay off the rest of the way.”
