St. David’s senior basketball player Kris Monroe signed his National Letter of Intent to attend Providence (RI) College Wednesday in the Lower School Gallery in front of an overflow crowd of family, friends, teachers and teammates (past and present). Monroe has led the Warriors to 43 victories in his two seasons and a trip to the 2A Final Four his sophomore year. “I’m proud of what he’s helped our program accomplish, but I’m even prouder of his character and the way he carries himself off the court,” said coach Will Coley. “I have no doubt that he will achieve great things at Providence.” The Friars are coming off a 20-13 season in the Big East Conference and have made four straight trips to the NCAA tournament under coach Ed Cooley. “I really liked him and the other coaches during my visit,” said Monroe. “I like everything about Providence and am excited to keep playing. I’m grateful for my classmates and the support at St. David’s and I’m very happy that my mom doesn’t have to pay for college.” Monroe has scored 1,017 points and grabbed 481 rebounds in his Warriors career. His senior season tips off Friday at home against Cape Fear Academy at 7:30.
