Team Stories

The middle school boys B team lost, 36-33, at Cary Academy Tuesday. The Warriors led 31-19 after three quarters, but couldn’t hold off the Chargers to snap their three game winning streak. “I don’t think we were focused enough to close it out,” said coach Charles Graves, whose team is 4-2 going into the exam and holiday break.  “We were coasting on our past success and it cost us. We’ll learn from it and come back strong after break. Will Nicholson led St. David’s with 10 points. The Warriors host NRCA on January 8th

The boys B team left Wake Christian with a 32-26 victory Thursday to raise their record to 4-1. The Warriors gave up just seven points in the second half to earn the win. “We had a very slow start, but had the fire to succeed,” said coach Charles Graves. “We wanted to work hard enough to come back. They have it off the court as well and that’s why we’re off to a good start. I’m very proud of my team.” Phillip Medlin led St. David’s with 15 points, while Clay Lewis added nine.

The middle school boys B team won their second straight game by a 32-30 score, this time over Cary Christian, Tuesday at home. The Warriors (3-1) led the entire game, but the Knights fought back late the fourth quarter to pull within one. Philip Medlin and Cruz English led St. David’s with 10 points each. “We stayed together and didn’t panic,” said coach Charles Graves. “We stopped them on defense and created turnovers when we needed to and ran our offense.” The Warriors play at Wake Christian Thursday.

Both middle school B teams defeated Wake Christian Friday afternoon at home. The girls started the doubleheader with a 14-7 victory over the Bulldogs. St. David’s did not allow a point in the first quarter for the second straight game and led 8-3 at halftime. “Our defense was outstanding for the entire game,” said coach Jason Redmond, whose team is 2-0. “We had a lot of open shots on offense that we didn’t make, but we will next time.” Greysen Woodie, Medlin Weddington and Rebekah Leshnock had four points each to lead SDS. The boys had to work overtime for a 32-30 victory. Clay Lewis hit the game winning shot with under ten seconds left. “We never gave up,” said coach Charles Graves. “It’s a great lesson for our guys to keep working no matter what the score is.” The lead changed hands multiple times, with neither team having more than a four point lead. Lewis led the St. David’s (2-1) scoring with 12 points.

The middle school boys basketball B team wiped out a seven point deficit with 90 seconds left to defeat Magellan Charter 23-19 Wednesday at St. David’s. The Warriors defense forced several Mariners turnovers and Clay Lewis hit multiple key free throws to shift momentum. Magellan also committed a flagrant foul with one minute to play that the Warriors turned into a five-point play. “That sequence was the key to our comeback,” said coach Charles Graves. “We overcame a slow start with a strong second half and our bench was very important during our run. The ones who weren’t playing showed great enthusiasm, which really helped their teammates on the floor. Everyone believed we could come back and we did.” Will Nicholson led SDS with nine points and Lewis added seven. William Manning had a team-best seven rebounds and Phillips Medlin came up with five steals.
