The Lower School Library and the Middle/Upper School Library support the mission of the school through a library program that encourages the development of faith, virtue and knowledge in our students.
The goals of the libraries are to provide access to information and resources in various forms, promote the love of reading, foster intellectual curiosity, and encourage our students to become effective researchers and discerning life-long learners.
The print, media and digital resources of the library support the curriculum and serve the informational and recreational needs of our school community. The print collection numbers 15,000, with thousands of additional resources available via digital subscriptions and eBooks. Magazines, newspapers and a parent collection invite browsing in the leisure reading section of the Middle/Upper School Library, and the Lower School Library includes a cozy reading area as well. Charging stations are located throughout the library, and laptops, iPads, and headphones may be checked out by students and faculty/staff. Both libraries have a number of iMacs with dual operating systems.
All students have flexible access to the libraries throughout the day. Lower School students enjoy weekly library enrichment classes. Fifth grade students receive an orientation to the Middle/Upper School Library at the beginning of the school year. Throughout the year, library staff works in collaboration with classroom and enrichment teachers, integrating information and digital literacy skills into the curriculum via classroom and/or individual research projects.
A number of special programs are sponsored by the library. The summer reading lists provide suggestions for students' summer reading at all grade levels. The fall book fair and Book Lovers’ Week in February are favorite annual events. Author visits, book clubs, and special programs promote the love of reading in our school community. Through the gift book program, the school community may donate books in honor or memory of a special person or event. Finally, we are blessed with a wonderful partnership with our parent (and grandparent) volunteers. The Friends’ Library Committee of St. David’s is an active and valued part of the library program.
